Chris Supranowitz is a researcher at The Insitute of Optics at the University of Rochester. Along with a number of other spectacular studies (such as quantum optics, trapping of atoms, dark states and entanglement), Chris has decided to look at the relatively boring grooves of a vinyl record using the institute’s electron microscope. Well, not boring for me.

From what I read, it’s not just a simple matter of sticking a record under a fancy microscope, as there is a lot of preparation (such as gold-sputtering the surface) and post-processing to be done. Having said that, the results are very cool:

Here is a shot of a number of record grooves (the dark bits are the top of the grooves, i.e. the uncut vinyl):

Here’s the grooves closer up – the little bumps are dust on the record:

And here’s a single groove even closer still, magnified 1000 times:

Chris also did the pits in a CD – here’s what they look like, just for contrast:

Chris decided to take the whole electron microscope image one step further, and created a blue/red 3-dimensional image of the record groove! So, if you have a pair of 3D glasses (sorry, the ones you got from watching Avatar won’t work – you need red on the left, blue on the right), throw them on and take a look at this amazing picture:

Maybe these vinyl grooves are only beautiful to an audio geek like me, but I think that these images are truly spectacular. I wonder what we’d see if it was magnified further still? Thanks to noiseforairports for the tip.

This horrible accident took place in Athens, Greece. According to police report, the Audi R8’s driver fell asleep at the wheel and the car drove off the road hitting the guardrail. This guardrail passed through the Audi – it entered in the left wheel and came out on the right side through the rear window. The driver was seriously injured at both legs and was rushed to the hospital. His girlfriend was lucky, she only had a couple of scratches.

P.S. Below you’ll see two similar cases with Ladas.

Here’s the similar accident with a Lada. The driver didn’t survive.

This one is with another Lada model. The driver didn’t notice a big piece of log on the forest road which was under the dust and that’s what happened.

Transforming a second-hand Ford Capri into the General Lee, from the Dukes of Hazzard, by covering it in little toy cars. Over four thousand toy cars were needed and so, in addition to searching out and purchasing appropriate toy cars himself, an appeal was started for people all over the world to send the artist their disused toy cars. The donator could write a little message on the toy car, or mark it in some other way, so they actually became part of the art whilst contributing to the sculpture.

A facelift is a great way to help you to look years younger, but many people still have plenty of questions about how it works and what it can do. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about facelifts.

Can a facelift really make me look 20 years younger? This type of cosmetic surgery will certainly make you look younger. During the procedure, a cosmetic surgeon will smooth out the skin and pull up the muscles, giving you a much more youthful appearance. Most people, however, do not look 20 years younger after having the surgery. A more realistic expectation is for patients to look 5 to 10 years younger following the procedure.

Female Cialis

Won’t my face look “frozen”? Many are scared to have this procedure because they have heard about how it can make you look frozen. This is something that can happen if you have a cosmetic surgeon who is inexperienced. In order to avoid this, make sure that you select a surgeon who is practiced in facelift and facial cosmetic surgery. A good cosmetic surgeon will not leave your face looking frozen.

How expensive is a facelift? The price ranges from one office to another. This surgery is one of the most sought-after procedures, aside from breast augmentation, and can range anywhere from $6,000 to over $20,000.

Clomid online

Will it be one procedure or many? Most facelifts require only one procedure. The cosmetic surgery takes a few hours and during that time, the surgeon tightens your face and smoothes out any wrinkles that you may have, allowing you to have much younger looking features.

Does a facelift last for forever? You will continue to age. However, if you’ve had a facelift, your face has a bit of a jumpstart, which means that you’ll still look younger than you are even if you never have another procedure again.

How long will recovery from a facelift be? This depends on how fast of a healer you are, but the average person heals very quickly. In just a few weeks you’ll find that you’re back to doing your normal activities and that all of the bruises will be healed. If there are any problems, or if you’re concerned, it is always a good idea to speak with your cosmetic surgeon to have your questions answered, both before and after surgery.
